As documented by the Associated Press at the time, the Mavericks extended a contract proposal to Nash, which was a five-year deal worth a total of $51 million, with an average annual salary of approximately $1.02 million, though the fifth year was only partially guaranteed. In contrast, the Phoenix Suns offered a five-year agreement totaling $65 million, translating to an average annual salary of around $1.3 million. Upon receiving the Suns' offer, Nash took the initiative to reach out to Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, seeking a matching offer.
